Chapter seventeen
Hope
Another mission.
Dread courses through me, just as heady as it was when the news was first delivered. I think Iâm going to be sick, and the knowing eyes of my mates constantly watching me isnât helping. My skin is crawling, and I know they donât mean to make it worse, but fuck, this is unbearable.
None of us have spoken about the punishment since the bath, and Iâm glad for it. I donât want to think about it, let alone talk about it. Itâs not healthy, I know that, but Iâm too tired to care. To top it off, my hopeâthe very Divine that I merged withâis nowhere to be found these days. Nothing about our lives, our futures, is hopeful. Itâs bleak and depressing, and I donât even care anymore.
But I know itâs on all our minds right now. How can it not be? This is the first mission since my fuck-up. Iâm sure my alphas are wondering if Iâm going to screw everything up againâI sure as hell am. I want to be able to reassure them that it wonât happen again, but I canât make that promise, and that kills me.
The guilt. The pain. Iâm drowning.
âJesse.â
My head snaps to the side, and I watch Karas cautiously as he holds his hand out to me, patiently waiting for me to reach out. I hesitate for a second, but thereâs no judgment in his eyes, just understanding and never-ending patience.
What did I do to deserve such good mates?
I place my hand in his, and his answering grin is mesmerizing. Heâs so handsome, so perfect. He gently lifts me from the sofa I had sank onto after changing into my fighting gear. Itâs just simple black leather thatâs surprisingly comfortable, and honestly Iâm not sure what the practicality of the leather is for, since bullets will still pierce the outfit just as easily as cloth, but whatever.
Karas guides me out of the new nest in the new mansion weâre going to be living in now, and a part of me wants to look around and explore, yet a bigger part of me simply doesnât care. Itâs just another place to sleep between the never-ending training sessions. Itâs not like weâre going to have a chance to use the lit pool I spotted from the window.
Michael is waiting downstairs, and he looks up at us as we make our way down. Once weâre all lined up before him, he finally speaks.
âYouâre on your own with todayâs mission. Itâs an easy enough task: just eliminate all the gang members in the drug house youâll be dropped in front of. Use the cover of night to do this. Iâll be waiting for your return across the street. Meet me there when youâve completed your task. Any questions?â
When itâs clear we donât have any, he opens the blinding portal that we immediately step through. Despite my feet feeling like theyâre weighted with concert, I step through alongside my mates.
I think Iâm really going to be sick.
